Gemini is an excellent, free general assistant, and we suggest children keep using it for curiosity. For homework the difference is the job each is built for. A general assistant answers whatever it is asked — including the set question, unless the child remembers to ask it not to — and it does not know the teacher’s task, the school’s books or pages, or what your child found hard last week, and it reports nothing to you. Study Desk starts from the teacher’s actual task and the actual book page, keeps the worked answer locked until your child has tried and had the try checked, brings ideas back on day 1, 3, 7 and 21 so they are remembered for the test, writes chapter tests like the school paper, and sends you each test result. The table above shows the difference.

It is designed the other way round. Before the explanation opens, the child is asked what the question wants and what they already know. The worked answer is kept on the server until they have written and checked their own. Miss Iram answers with a hint or a different example, never the set answer. Memory practice asks them to recall before rereading, and the final answer is always handwritten in the school notebook — the desk never fills it in.

There are no streaks, points, badges or endless feeds. A break comes every 50 minutes, the day ends when today’s homework is done, and you can set a daily limit (for example 90 minutes) after which the desk closes kindly until tomorrow. The weekend writing pages are printed and done with a pencil.

Lessons ask them to explain ideas in their own words and pose questions worth wondering about, the weekend pack includes writing their own answer from scratch, and before each homework explanation the desk asks “where in your book might the answer be?”. The desk teaches the method; what they write is theirs.

The written lessons are made from the actual Class 6 books (Exploring Science 7, Maths Progress International 7, World Watch History 1, Physical Geography 6) and every one names its book, unit and page so it can be checked against the book. Lessons made from homework show exactly what was read from the upload, which the child or parent can correct. Anyone can press ⚑ Report a mistake in any lesson; each report is checked against the book. Machine marks are labelled as a guide — the school teacher’s mark is the real one.

The ones with the strongest evidence for children: retrieval practice (recall before rereading), spaced repetition (day 1, 3, 7, 21), worked examples then fading (one step at a time), attempt first, then feedback, dual coding (words with a picture or a narrated slide), and explaining aloud to a parent. Questions are decoded into plain English, because the wording — not the idea — is often what stops a child.

The desk does, automatically: multiple choice and true/false are marked instantly; written answers and short test answers are checked by Miss Iram against the marking points; a photographed paper is read and marked the same way. You get each chapter test result by email as soon as it is marked, and we can send it on WhatsApp too.

Onto this site’s own server, in a folder outside the public web root, reachable only by the account that uploaded them. Photos are shrunk on the device before upload and deleted after 60 days; the words read from them are kept. See Privacy & child data for exactly which AI services are used.
